Social Symbiosis was an answer to the theme of WAF Student Competition 2012 which was Rethink-Renew. The idea was to create a community hub in the heart of the city. We chose Bandung, Indonesia, because there are alot of thriving communities of all types of interests in this city. Urban infill will be done in one (from many) of the abandoned buildings in Jalan Asia Afrika (a major road in Bandung) to make it a catalyst as the Center for the communities. In the long run the other abandoned buildings should start and fill up with diverse uses and activities.

 

In October 2012, we attended the student design charette at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore as one of the shortlisted teams in the competition. The design charette lasted three days, with a new twist that the competition organizers gave to further develop our designs. In the end the competition was won by the Italian team from University of Ferrara entitled In the Core of Renaissance Architecture.

 

Social Symbiosis adalah jawaban kami untuk tema WAF Student Competition 2012 yaitu Rethink-Renew. Idenya adalah untuk menciptakan sebuah pusat komunitas di pusat kota. Kami memilih kota Bandung, karena banyaknya komunitas kreatif yang terdapat di kota ini. Urban infill adalah metode yang kami pilih pada salah satu bangunan yang ditinggalkan di Jalan Asia Afrika (jalan utama di Bandung) untuk menjadi katalis sebagai pusat dari komunitas. Harapannya adalah bangunan-bangunan lain yang ditinggalkan akan segera diisi dan menimbulkan keberagaman fungsi dan kegiatan di Jalan Asia Afrika.

 

Pada Oktober 2012, kami mengikuti design charette di Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, sebagai salah satu tim finalis. Design charette berlangsung selama tiga hari, dengan tambahan tema untuk mengembangkan design lebih lanjut. Pada akhirnya kompetisi dimenangkan oleh tim dari University of Ferrara, Italia, dengan judul In the Core of Renaissance Architecture.
