Urban Rigger

The urban rigger is a unique approach to sustainable living in Copenhagen, Denmark built in 2016. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and Danfoss, the project covers an area of 680sqm, accomodating to student housing for the city. The footprint doesn’t take land from the city, rather it floats and is a buoyant structure in a harbour setting. As the number of students grows, additional need for student housing should be able to accomodate without constraints to expand the city. Students are amongst the first to experience the challenges of finding a place to live in an undersupplied market. Often new in town and with a small disposable income, they frequently face difficulties finding affordable and permanent housing. This design introduces a new typology to the underutilized and underdeveloped harbour area in the heart of the city, which keeps the students living at the heart of the city. The design also utilises up cycled shipping containers which are stacked creating 12 studio residences, framing a common area in the middle.
