Bishan Park

A park that floods during high rain season? Bishan park in Singapore is a naturalized 3 km long meandering river. Formerly a drainage channel, it is now a urban green parkland which helps with water treatment for the city, flood management, biodiversity, recreation, and community engagement. The drainage channel constructed in 1988 was a 2.7 km long 24 m wide channel that was designed to help with flood management of the Kallang River. However, it was redesigned by Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl Singapore to create a meandering naturalized river that helps reduce the water flow speed of the river during high rain seasons, as well as to create a water catchment basin for the river. Besides its flood management system, the park is also designed as a community public space with restaurants, playgrounds, and galleries built throughout the park. The naturalisation also helps with the biodiversity of the area. With otters, sparrows, and other wild animals roaming around the park.
